Asian Sesame Spinach

This is a great and simple recipe. Your whole family will probably be grabbing seconds and thirds. Even picky eaters find this tantalizing. The secret is to not overcook the spinach. You can also tweak this recipe by adding browned garlic to make garlic spinach. The other secret is to use good quality ingredients. I’ve bought sesame oil at american stores. I’m usually unhappy with the way it tastes. I’m not sure if it is because it stays on the shelves too long in american markets but it often times tastes stale and old and like it might be mixed with other oils an is diluted down. If you have an asian market close to you, you can find it for a low price and a little bit goes a long way. You can leave it in a cool cupboard for about 6 months or keep it in the fridge to make it last longer.

I’ve also tried doing this with multiple brands of soy sauce. A good quality japanese soy-sauce should work but my favorite, hands down, is Golden Mountain Brand. It is a Thai soy sauce but I grew up on it and everyone who has come over to my house loves it. You can find Golden Mountain Brand soy sauce at many Asian markets. I’ve found it at Uwajimaya and all Vietnamese markets seem to carry it. Another plus, it is usually cheap. A large bottle is around $1.50-2.00 although I haven’t price checked it at Uwajima, which is always more expensive than everywhere else. It has a distinctive label, a creepy little chef guy and a green lid. I can usually find it in multiple sizes so you can get a small one if you don’t have space for a large bottle.

Ingredients:

  • 2x 6oz bags of pre-washed spinach
  • 1 cup of water
  • Good soy Sauce (I like Golden Mountain Brand for this)
  • Sesame seeds to sprinkle on top
  • Sesame oil

Directions:

  • In a medium sized pot with a lid bring the water to a boil. Add the spinach and cover for about a minute. If the top has not wilted yet, give it a quick stir. Drain the water thoroughly.
  • Add soysauce to taste (different soysauces have varying salt levels)
  • Add sesame oil to taste (start with a few teaspoons and add more if you like)
  • Place the spinach on a serving platter after you’ve adjusted the flavor. Sprinkle on top with sesame seeds.
  • If you wish to use garlic, just brown a few cloves in a little cooking oil and stir it in when you add the sesame oil.
